Pinwheel Quilt-Part 4

From each colored square and white square I get this

Stacks of sewn squares

Stacks of squares cut to triangles

Four pile, four colors

This is a total of 320 triangles, all of which need to be pressed open (fun times!) So I know that it will take a few hours, but then I look at my one pinwheel that I completed, and it seems more do-able

Pinwheel Quilt-Part 3

Before you think I'm totally crazy, I don't go through all of the steps one at a time...I create a mini assembly line

To save time, I laid out the white squares, and topped them with the red squares, face down

I pin them...

Mark the line...

Pinwheel Quilt-Part 2

stacks of squares, 320 squares total (only took 2 hours!)

Mark a line down the centre of the wrong side of each colored square, diagonally. Sew each color square to a white square with the right sides together, using the line to make 2 lines, each with a 1/4 inch seam allowance

Cut down the centre of each square

Press open, towards the colored triangle

Result: one-quarter of a pinwheel. Now, I just have to do this 160 more times!

Note: time to sew, cut, and press four colors: 8 hours!

Pinwheel Quilt-Part 1

I thought for fun, I would document the makings of a pinwheel quilt. I found some fun polka-dotted fabric and a classic quilt that I was inspired by.

I started with a good hot iron to iron my pre-washed fabric to make it easier to cut

I started with a polka dot print in 4 colors: red, navy, yellow and teal (1/2 meter of each) and 1.5 m of plain white

I cut 4 inch squares out of each. First, cut 4" strips, then cut the strips into squares.

I cut 40 squares from each color and 160 white squares.

The colors are cut and stacked (note to self: use pre-cuts next time)
